Bringing exotic pets to Norway require a permit
According to Norwegian law and regulations taking exotic animals requires a permission from the Norwegian Environment Agency.
Certain species, mainly traditional domesticated species like dogs and cats, can be brought in without permit. In addition to traditionally domesticated species a number og species can be brought in and kept in Norway see list below.
Assessments made while handling applications
Import of living organisms to Norway require permission from the Norwegian Environment Agency. Whether a permission to bring the organism into Norway is granted or not will depend on the potential risk posed by the organism to Norwegian biodiversity.
Refugees from Ukraine can apply by sending an application via email to: postmottak@miljodir.no.
Please state your full name,, emailadress, phone number, where you stay in Norway (if address is known) and the name of the species in English (mandatory) and Latin name for the species (preferably).
Applications will be given a swift handling and import permits will be granted for more species than we normally would in response to your situation. We will however not allow bringing in species that if released to the environment will pose too much of a threat to Norwegian biodiversity.
Terms
A permit allowing you to bring in, and keep your pet for your stay in Norway, will normally be given on these terms:
- The pet shall be kept in such manner that they can not be let out into the environment even during transportation in Norway. The pet must be kept in a cage or equivalent arrangement indoors at all time.
- You are not allowed to sell or give your pet to another person without a permit from the Norwegian Environment Agency.
- Upon leaving Norway for returning to Ukraina or to take up residency in another country, the animal must be brought with you.
- If your pet escapes you must alert the Norwegian Environment Agency immediately.
